Social tempos vary widely; part of the skill is matching the size and style of movement to the music.

Origin

Brazil, 1990s — dancers raised on lambada adapted it to the zouk music of the French Caribbean, and Brazilian Zouk was born. It has grown into one of the world’s fastest-spreading social dances.

Music

4/4 time — flowing, wave-like music with a rolling slow-quick-quick pulse; danced to zouk, R&B, and pop remixes that cross modern genres.

Character

Flowing and elastic — long, continuous movement that travels through the whole body.
